The Gurmani Centre for Languages and Literature recently organized a comprehensive four-session weekly workshop titled “Hindī Rāsm ul Khat Sīkhēn” for October 2024. Led by the esteemed Dr. Shahid Rasheed, Assistant Professor at Forman Christian College and a Hindī language trainer, this initiative aimed to bring together a diverse group of enthusiastic scholars eager to enhance their understanding of the Hīndī language and its rich cultural heritage. The workshop initiated with a detailed introduction to the Hindī script, emphasizing its importance in the context of South Asian culture and literature. Dr. Rasheed provided an engaging overview of South Asian mythology, exploring its impact on language and identity. Participants were introduced to significant myths and legends, focusing on the Māhābhārata and Rāmāyan. In the broader South Asian cultural context, this discussion illuminated how these epic narratives have shaped Hindī literature. Students also learned the foundational letters of the Hindī alphabet through interactive exercises, including written practice to improve their writing skill. In the second session, the focus shifted to the intricacies of Hindī grammar and sentence construction, which are vital for effective communication. Dr. Rasheed introduced essential grammatical structures, including noun-verb agreements, tense usage, and sentence types. Participants also read selected poems from the Hīndī Qāid’ah, enhancing their understanding of poetic forms and techniques while reinforcing grammatical concepts through real-life examples. The final two sessions were dedicated to advanced reading techniques and comprehensive revision of the material covered. An extensive reading package featuring diverse texts was introduced, aimed at enhancing the reading fluency. Students engaged in group discussions about the texts, focusing on themes, vocabulary, and cultural significance, in a collaborative learning environment. The last session primarily focused on revising key grammar rules and writing techniques through practical exercises and peer discussions. To conclude the workshop, Dr. Rasheed delivered a melodious reading of the poem “Hai Kathā Sagrām kī, Vishu kē Kalyān kī,” inspiring participants with the lyrical beauty of the Hindī language. Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi, Director Gurmani Centre, expressed gratitude to both Dr. Rasheed and the participants for their dedication and enthusiasm. He congratulated everyone on their accomplishments and awarded certificates to participants, recognizing their commitment to learning. Dr. Qasmi also shared exciting news about an upcoming workshop focused on the Sanskrit language, encouraging participants to continue their journey in exploring the linguistic and cultural richness of languages related to Pakistan.
