Contemporary Balochi Poetry

The Gurmani Centre for Language and Literature inaugurated its annual calendar with a session on contemporary Balochi poetry led by Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar and Dr. Jehanzeb Khan Baloch. Dr. Zia Ur Rehman Baloch, assistant professor at the Department of Pakistani Languages at Allama Iqbal University, presented a comprehensive analysis of Balochi poetry's evolution. He emphasized its role in advocating social justice and resisting foreign domination. He discussed the emergence of feminist and progressive themes, noting increased female participation since 2005. The session concluded with a poignant recitation of modern Balochi poetry by Dr. Zia, featuring the works of Mubarik Kazi, showcasing its enduring appeal. Interactive discussions with the audience explored the stylistic diversity, political nature and distinctiveness of Balochi poetry. In his concluding remarks, Dr Baloch reflected on the significance of poetry in recording history and expressing political activism of the region. Dr. Nayyar deliberated on the intersection of literature, arts, and politics, highlighting art's dual role as a pursuit of aesthetic pleasure and a tool for social commentary. Commencing the new semester with this session underscores the Centre's commitment to nurturing and promoting regional languages, reaffirming its dedication to inclusive and diverse scholarly pursuits.
