History of Punjab through Folk Literature
Moderator: Zahid Hussain
Guest Speaker: Professor Saeed Bhutta
This particular session was highly informative in making the audience understand the validity and legitimacy of our very own folk literature in piecing together different aspects of Punjabi history. A conversation between Zahid Hussain and Professor Saeed Bhutta surveyed the history and development of Punjab’s folk literature. Professor Bhutta conversed with the students in Punjabi, tracing the history of language and words that allowed people’s lived experiences to be captured and preserved. He then elaborated on the politics that arose due to the invention of paper, where only the ruling class such as kings and their courtiers had the privilege of recording their narratives and opinions on paper, and to give voice to people of other social groups, oral tradition gained popularity and remains significant even today.
