In The Art of Rhetoric, Aristotle states that “A good style must, first of all, be clear”. While most things have changed since Aristotle, this quote still rings true for academic writing. For ideas to be articulated and embodied in a way that can make them more accessible and relatable to their audience, writing skills must be cultivated and rules and regulations need to be strictly followed. Most graduate programs therefore, demand a rigorous and thorough command over academic writing. Getting through this may become a daunting task if one is not aware of its methodologies and complexities.
The Gurmani Centre for Languages and Literature designed the Urdu Academic Writing Workshop especially for MPhil and PhD students who need guidance in this field. Eminent professors and scholars of international repute helped the participants develop an understanding of core skills and methods required to excel in planning and writing research papers. Dr. Najeeb Jamal, Dr. Moeen Nizami, Dr. Najiba Arif, Dr. Abid Sial, Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, and Dr. Fatima Fayyaz conducted the workshop in person while Dr. Shafay Kidwai (from India) joined via Zoom. Each instructor highlighted one aspect of academic writing and their collective instructions offered the participants a firm grounding in making their written expressions meaningful and their transmission smooth and efficient.
